Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) Residential Initial Training Courses (ITC) Stromness, Orkney Islands, Scotland

Residential AVIGuk-accredited Initial Training Courses in Video Interaction Guidance are offered in the picturesque historic port of Stromness, Orkney Islands on these dates:

  • 27 April – 3 May 2019
  • 24 – 30 August 2019

The programme includes half-day training sessions in VIG with plentiful free time for sightseeing.

Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) is a strengths-based therapeutic intervention, which helps bring about positive change in people’s communication and relationships, by promoting attuned interactions.

Training to become a VIG guider consists of a two-day Initial Training Course (ITC), or equivalent half-days, followed by supervised practice; these are accredited and certificated by the Association of VIG UK (AVIGuk).

The Orkney archipelago lies off John O’Groats in the north of Scotland. You can enjoy the world-class archaeological sites, as well as abundant nature, high-quality local produce from land and sea, and the rich cultural heritage. For information on travelling to Orkney see

The Programme

You are asked to arrange your arrival in time for a welcome evening dinner and orientation on the first day of the programme. You can be met at the airport or ferry terminals by arrangement.

Four half-days will be taken up in VIG training and practical workshops. Topics covered are:

  • Where did VIG come from?
  • Core principles of attuned interactions
  • The science
  • Analysis of video – practice session
  • Attuning to self
  • Introducing VIG to clients – practice session
  • The shared review
  • Shared review – practice session
  • Practitioners’ voices
  • Next steps in training

Numbers are restricted to allow for full participation in the practice sessions in small groups (maximum numbers: 2 groups, 4 or 5 per group). By spreading the training over several sessions throughout the week, there is more time for reflection and learning becomes deeper. The opportunity to build rewarding professional relationships through discussions with the other participants enhances the experience still further. Two full days and the other half-days are left free so you can enjoy relaxing in the fresh sea air and exploring Orkney.

The accommodation

The week’s programme is personally hosted by National VIG Supervisor Miriam Landor in the beautifully restored and appointed  Merchants House / Fishermans Cottage, which share a private garden on the Stromness seafront. All meals are included in the price and are home cooked, using fresh organic and local produce wherever possible; special diets can be accommodated with advance notice.

Our accommodation is spacious and peaceful, encouraging rest, reading and recuperation. The award-winning Pier Arts Centre, Stromness Museum, Stromness library and many cafes and bars provide indoor entertainment. There are many stunningly beautiful walks in the area and Stromness is served by regular buses to Kirkwall and beyond; car or cycle hire is also available locally. For the adventurous, Stromness has Orkney’s only PADI diving centre, Scapa Scuba Diving. Tourist information can be found at

The prices for the week have been kept as low as possible and are all-inclusive – 4 star accommodation, all meals, transfers from ferries/airport and AVIGuk-accredited VIG Initial Training Course are all included in the price.

Numbers are restricted and the annual summer Orkney Residential VIG ITCs are increasingly popular, so early booking is essential. Your place can be reserved immediately with £100 deposit (non-refundable), with balance due six weeks before the programme starts. Employers can be invoiced for the full cost, or for the training component alone, on proof of authorisation to attend.

There may be some availability for partners not taking part in the ITC to accompany participants in the accommodation for a small additional fee.
